The mural for the festival Okrasheno @okrashenofest
Sheregesh, Kemerovo region, Russia

I was impressed by a local photo archive of 1900s I found at internet. Old photographs from 1927 show mountain Shors from the village, hunters on skis and
a shaman with a tambourine. Shamans always play the role of intermediaries between people and spirits. The shamans of the Shors were both men and women, they were dressed in everyday clothes, the shamans of the Shors always tied their heads with a scarf. Since spirits from the other world were depicted as animals
in various folk tales, I also decided to surround the character with companions - otter and owls. In addition, I used the image of a sacred plant for the Shors - birch.

As far as I know, the life of the native people is now under threat, in connection with coal mining in the region, sacred places are being destroyed and traditional hunting and fishing of the Shors is becoming obscured. Shaman is an image-amulet, a protective image that reminds us of the value of connection with ancestors and respectful relationships with nature. I really want my illustrator's fairy-tale interpretation from a new perspective to remind the locals of the beauty and depth
of the culture that has existed in this territory for centuries.
